Ravichandran Ashwin Awarded Padma Shri by President Droupadi Murmu

Indian off-spin maestro Ravichandran Ashwin added yet another prestigious accolade to his illustrious career, receiving the Padma Shri — India’s fourth-highest civilian honour — from President Droupadi Murmu in a grand ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on April 28. It was a proud moment, not just for Ashwin, but for the entire Indian cricket fraternity.

Padma Shri Recognizes Ashwin’s Immense Contribution to Indian Cricket

Throughout his remarkable career, Ashwin built a legacy as one of the most intelligent and lethal bowlers across formats. With an incredible tally of 537 Test wickets, 156 in ODIs, and 72 in T20Is, Ashwin established himself as a pillar of India’s bowling attack for over a decade.

He played pivotal roles in India’s triumphs at the 2011 Cricket World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy. When it comes to spin bowling, only the legendary Anil Kumble boasts more international wickets among Indian bowlers. With 765 wickets across formats, Ashwin’s numbers tell the story of a true giant of the game.

Ashwin’s Graceful Retirement from International Cricket

Every glorious journey eventually finds its close. Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket after the third Test of the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia at the Gabba — a match where he wasn’t part of the playing XI.

In a simple, heartfelt press conference after the match, Ashwin revealed his decision to step away from the India jersey. True to his character, he chose to retire on his own terms, opting for dignity over grand farewells — just as he had quietly and efficiently built his legendary career.

Continuing His Magic in the IPL with CSK

Though he has stepped away from international cricket, Ashwin’s passion for the game remains undimmed. He continues to feature in the IPL 2025 season, representing Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Even in the twilight of his career, Ashwin’s guile and experience are proving invaluable, as he continues to outsmart batters half his age.
